The subject is up close and in focus where as the background is blurred to subtract less attention than the subject.

Taking a picture at eye-level with something that is not eye level with you.

Backlighting:
Backlighting shows all those fine little hairs, as compared to if the light were in front it wouldn’t do so.

Lighting:
Because of the sun in the background you can’t tell if that is a storm could or a regulat cloud.
